If Google does not detect a security key, check the connection, compatibility, and registration before resetting it. A hardware reset can affect credentials for services beyond Google.
Check whether this key is enrolled
Confirm that you are signing in to the Google Account where the key was added. A message asking you to register the key is different from a failure to detect a registered device.
If another trusted method works, inspect the account’s key list and the enrollment status. A newly added key may not be immediately available for every challenge.
For a USB connection
- Use a compatible port and any required adapter.
- Connect the key firmly and follow its manufacturer’s interaction instructions.
- Touch the contact or button only when the legitimate sign-in flow requests it.
- Check the browser or operating-system prompt for a required key PIN.
- Try a known working supported port or device when appropriate.
The key’s PIN, a computer’s unlock PIN, and the Google password are different secrets. Repeatedly guessing a key PIN can cause another problem rather than fixing detection.
For NFC
Check that NFC is enabled and that the phone and key support the intended method. Follow the device’s instructions for where to hold the key, and remove a case or other obstruction if it interferes.
Google’s Android guide also recommends current Google Play services and supported software. Do not assume Bluetooth is the correct connection for an NFC or USB key merely because another passkey flow uses it.
Check software and policy
Use an updated supported browser and operating system. Google’s current guide says newly registered keys do not work on Android 8.0 or earlier. For a hardware passkey, also check FIDO2 support and the passkey requirements.
On a managed or virtualized system, ask the administrator about USB, NFC, and authentication restrictions. Do not change broad device permissions or disable protection as a generic repair.
Use a backup before a destructive reset
If another enrolled method is offered, use it and preserve account access. Follow the key manufacturer’s recovery instructions only after understanding which stored credentials a reset affects. If the key is lost or cannot be restored, use Google’s supported replacement or account-recovery path.
