Replace a Google 2-Step Verification phone number before giving up the old number whenever possible. A recovery phone or general contact number is a separate setting, so inspect the verification settings themselves.
Prepare another working sign-in method
Confirm that you can sign in with a trusted device, passkey, security key, backup code, or another method already available to the account. Do not remove your only working option before the replacement is ready.
If you have already lost the old number, use another offered method. Do not ask the number’s new holder to read out security codes.
Review the number inside 2-Step Verification
- Open Google Account Security & sign-in.
- Open 2-Step Verification.
- Inspect the phone-number method and the options Google provides for updating or replacing it.
- Enter the new number with the correct country code and complete verification when requested.
- Return to the settings and confirm the saved number.
The controls offered depend on account configuration and policy. If the phone method is not available, use Google’s supported alternatives or ask the administrator for a managed account.
Allow for the new number’s trust period
Google says a new 2-Step Verification number may take up to seven days to become trusted. Having received one setup message does not guarantee immediate availability for every sensitive challenge.
An already trusted passkey or physical security key may allow an approval step that speeds activation when Google offers it. A newly purchased key that has not been registered and trusted is not an instant substitute.
Review related settings separately
Check the recovery phone and any other service-specific uses of the old number. Google may continue offering previous recovery information temporarily after a recovery change as a security measure.
Also review phones receiving Google prompts. Prompts depend on signed-in eligible devices, so replacing the SMS number does not automatically sign an old phone out.
Finish with a controlled verification
Confirm the replacement status and test an appropriate sign-in while preserving another working session. Keep the independent backup available. If you cannot reach the settings or satisfy verification, use official recovery rather than disabling protection or creating a replacement account.
