The person who can help with a Google sign-in problem depends on whether the account is personal or organization-managed. Establish the account type before applying a recovery procedure intended for somebody else.
For a personal Google Account
Use Google’s account-recovery process if you forgot the password or cannot complete verification. A company administrator does not gain control of your unrelated personal Gmail account merely because you use it for work.
A personal account can use a non-Gmail email address. Therefore, a custom domain by itself is not conclusive proof of Workspace management. Check the account’s management information and the organization’s documented sign-in arrangements.
For an organization-managed account
An authorized Google Workspace or Cloud Identity administrator can reset a user’s password in the Admin console. Google’s administrator guide requires the relevant reset-password and user-management privileges.
For administrators following that guide, the route is Directory → Users, then the relevant user’s reset-password control. The guide also directs administrators to reset sign-in cookies after resetting the password. A password reset alone should not be treated as a complete compromise investigation.
When the organization uses its own sign-in provider
If single sign-on sends you to your employer’s identity system, follow the organization’s password and recovery process. Google’s administrator guide explicitly points to separate instructions for third-party SSO.
Tell the support team whether the failure occurs before or after that redirect, and provide the exact non-sensitive error. Do not send a password or one-time code in a support ticket.
Administrator access has its own recovery path
An administrator who cannot access the Admin console needs the administrator-recovery procedure linked from Google’s guide. Resetting another administrator can require super-administrator privileges. Do not assume that every help-desk user can perform every reset.
Check the result beyond the password
After a managed reset, users may need to authenticate again in Google apps and connected mail clients. The administrator should also investigate unauthorized sessions and recovery changes if compromise was suspected.
For either account type, verify that the intended identity and data return. A new account with a similar address is not a recovery of the original one.
