Google’s email settings serve different purposes. Choose the setting for the job you need to do rather than replacing every address with the same mailbox.
Recovery email: regain access and receive security information
A recovery email can help when you cannot sign in and can receive security-related notices. Google’s guidance is to use an address you regularly access that is different from the one you use to sign in to this Google Account.
To review it, open Google Account Security & sign-in → Recovery email under the sign-in options. Complete any verification required. Do this while you still have account access: you cannot simply add recovery information from outside a locked account during recovery.
Contact email: receive account communications
The contact email concerns where Google sends communications about services you use. It is not the same as renaming Gmail or transferring the account. Google says the primary account email receives important service information unless a different contact email is added.
Review the available email settings under Personal info → Email. Check the explanation beside the specific field; do not assume that setting a contact address also changes all product-specific notification settings.
Alternate email: another eligible sign-in address
An alternate email can let you sign in to the existing Google Account with a non-Gmail address you own. You still use the Google Account’s password, not the other mail provider’s password. Google requires verification and does not accept an address already linked to another Google Account for this addition.
Alternate addresses are not a privacy shield. In some sharing situations, other people can see the primary Gmail address instead.
Primary email: the main account identity
The Google Account email is the account’s main address. An eligible Gmail-to-Gmail rename is a separate feature with its own effects and limits. Adding a recovery or contact address does not perform that rename.
After changing a security address
Confirm that the replacement mailbox is accessible and protected. Google may continue offering previous recovery information for seven days after a change as a security precaution. Do not interpret that alone as a failed save. Managed accounts and particular regions or devices may offer different options; use the displayed controls or ask your administrator.
