The world’s six fastest marathons all happen in cities where the course is unusually flat. Boston is iconic but slower.

What Makes a Fast Marathon
Marathon course records depend on three factors: elevation profile (flat is fastest), weather (cool and dry), and elite-field depth (more competitors push pace).
Berlin is consistently the world’s fastest marathon course. Eight of the last nine men’s world records were set in Berlin. Chicago, London, Valencia, and Tokyo are also extremely fast.
Boston is slow by record standards — its course has rolling hills (Heartbreak Hill etc.), and prevailing winds vary. Pikes Peak Marathon at 215 minutes is by far the slowest WMM-affiliated due to its mountain ascent.
Frequently Asked Questions
World's fastest marathon course?
Berlin (men’s WR 2:00:35 by Kelvin Kiptum, 2023). Tokyo and Chicago are within minutes of the record.
Why is Boston so slow?
Hilly course (Heartbreak Hill) and net elevation drop prevent record-eligibility. Boston runs are world-class but typically slower than Berlin.
How fast was Kiptum's record?
2:00:35 (120.58 minutes) at Berlin 2023. Kiptum tragically died in early 2024.
Why does weather matter so much?
Marathon pace requires sustained effort; heat compounds quickly. Cool 10-15°C is ideal.
