Top 10 Busiest Airports by Passenger Traffic

Passenger traffic figures are reported annually by the Airports Council International (ACI). They include both arriving and departing passengers but exclude transit passengers who do not deplane. Most major airports recovered from COVID-era declines by 2023-2024.

# Name Annual Passengers (millions) Unit
1 Atlanta (ATL) 104 millions
2 Dubai (DXB) 87 millions
3 Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) 82 millions
4 London Heathrow (LHR) 79 millions
5 Tokyo Haneda (HND) 78 millions
6 Denver (DEN) 77 millions
7 Istanbul (IST) 76 millions
8 Los Angeles (LAX) 75 millions
9 Chicago O'Hare (ORD) 73 millions
10 Seoul Incheon (ICN) 70 millions

How Airport Traffic Is Counted

ACI counts each passenger movement (arrival or departure) once. A round-trip traveler counts twice; a transit passenger who disembarks counts twice; a transit passenger who stays on the plane is not counted. Cargo flights and private aviation are excluded.

Atlanta’s dominance comes from being a hub for Delta Air Lines, the world’s largest airline by fleet and passengers. Most of ATL’s traffic is connecting passengers — people changing planes between US destinations. The airport’s geography (located in the southeast US, central to most major American cities) is ideal for hub-and-spoke routing.

Dubai overtook Heathrow in the late 2010s for international traffic, then was caught up by post-COVID recovery elsewhere. DXB hosts Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, which connects East-West routes through a single mega-hub. Passenger growth has been driven by tourism and business connectivity, not just transit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the busiest airport in the world?

Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson at over 104 million passengers in 2023. It has been the world’s busiest airport almost continuously since 1998.

Is JFK the busiest US airport?

No. Atlanta has more passengers than any US airport. JFK ranks lower (around 63M) and is the third-busiest behind Atlanta and Dallas/Fort Worth.

Did COVID change the rankings?

Yes, temporarily. Chinese airports fell sharply during 2020-2022 lockdowns. Atlanta and Dallas/Fort Worth maintained their spots faster. By 2024, most rankings recovered to pre-pandemic patterns.

Why is Dubai so busy with a relatively small population?

DXB is a mega-hub for Emirates, which connects 150+ destinations through one airport. Most DXB passengers are not visiting Dubai — they are changing planes.
