Animal Lifespan Game — Higher or Lower?

A bowhead whale can outlive a U.S. president by 200 years. A mayfly does not see two sunsets. Lifespan is one of biology’s wildest variables.

How to Play: Guess if the animal on the right has a LONGER or SHORTER typical lifespan than the one on the left.

Top 10 Longest-Living Animals

Cold water and slow metabolism are the recipe for extreme longevity. The longest-lived vertebrate, the Greenland shark, lives in water just above freezing and grows about 1 cm per year. The longest-lived land animal is the giant tortoise — same recipe: cold-blooded and slow.

# Name Lifespan (years) Unit
1 Greenland Shark 400 years
2 Bowhead Whale 200 years
3 Aldabra Giant Tortoise 150 years
4 Galápagos Tortoise 150 years
5 Koi Carp 100 years
6 Macaw 80 years
7 African Elephant 70 years
8 Crocodile 70 years
9 Cockatoo 60 years
10 Asian Elephant 60 years

What Determines Animal Lifespan

Three patterns run through animal longevity. Larger animals tend to live longer than smaller ones (an elephant outlives a mouse). Cold-blooded animals tend to outlive warm-blooded ones at similar size (a crocodile outlives a deer). And animals that hibernate, fly, or live in water tend to outlive their land-bound, active relatives.

Greenland sharks set the absolute record. A 2016 radiocarbon-dated study estimated some individuals at 272–512 years old, with 400 years as a working average for the largest specimens. They were swimming in the Arctic when Newton was alive.

Bowhead whales, the longest-lived mammals, can reach 200+ years — confirmed by 19th-century stone harpoon points found embedded in living whales. Their cold habitat and slow metabolism let cells repair damage faster than they accumulate it.

At the other end, the mayfly’s adult lifespan of one to a few days is a feature, not a bug — the entire purpose of the adult stage is mating, while the larval stage may have lasted years. Many insects have similar ‘invisible’ long larval phases under brief adult ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the longest-living animal?

Greenland sharks at up to ~400 years, the longest-living vertebrate. Some bivalves and corals can technically live longer (clones can persist for thousands of years), but among individual animals, the Greenland shark holds the record.

How long do elephants live?

African elephants typically live 60–70 years in the wild. Asian elephants average slightly shorter at around 50–60 years.

Why do mayflies live so briefly?

Mayflies’ aquatic larval stage can last 1–2 years; the adult flying stage exists only for mating and dies within hours to days. The adult often has no functioning mouth.

Do larger animals always live longer?

Generally yes among mammals, but not absolutely. Bats and some birds live far longer than their size predicts because flight selects for low cellular damage. Naked mole rats live 30+ years despite being mouse-sized.

Note: Lifespans are typical maximum or average maximum-recorded values for the species, drawn from zoological references. Wild and captive populations often differ.
