How to Use Section Zoom in Slideshow for Interactive Flow

You want to jump to a specific part of your PowerPoint presentation during a slideshow without clicking through every slide. Section Zoom creates a clickable thumbnail that instantly jumps to a selected section of your deck. This article explains how to insert and configure Section Zoom in PowerPoint to build an interactive, non-linear flow for your audience.

What Section Zoom Does and What You Need Before Using It

Section Zoom is a feature in PowerPoint that links a thumbnail image on one slide to an entire section of the presentation. When you click the thumbnail during a slideshow, PowerPoint jumps to the first slide of that section and plays through all slides in that section. After the section ends, the slideshow returns to the original slide with the Zoom thumbnail. This creates a seamless, interactive flow without breaking the presentation into separate files.

Before you can use Section Zoom, your presentation must be divided into sections. Sections are named groups of slides that appear in the left-hand thumbnail pane. To create a section, right-click between two slides in the thumbnail pane and select Add Section. Give each section a descriptive name such as Overview, Data, or Q&A. Section Zoom works only with sections that contain at least one slide.

Section Zoom is available in PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, PowerPoint 2019, and PowerPoint 2021. It is not available in PowerPoint 2016 or earlier versions. If you are using PowerPoint Online or the mobile app, Section Zoom is not supported.

Steps to Insert and Configure Section Zoom for Interactive Flow

1. Divide your presentation into sections
   Open your presentation in PowerPoint. In the thumbnail pane on the left, right-click between two slides where you want a section break. Choose Add Section from the context menu. Type a name for the section and press Enter. Repeat this for each part of your presentation that you want to link to from the main menu slide.
2. Insert a Section Zoom on the menu slide
   Navigate to the slide where you want the interactive menu, usually the first or second slide. Go to Insert > Zoom > Section Zoom. In the Insert Section Zoom dialog, check the boxes next to the sections you want to include. You can select multiple sections. Click Insert. PowerPoint places one thumbnail for each selected section on the current slide.
3. Arrange and size the thumbnails
   Drag each thumbnail to the desired position on the slide. To resize a thumbnail, select it and drag a corner handle. Hold Shift while dragging to maintain the aspect ratio. To align multiple thumbnails, select them all by holding Ctrl and clicking each one, then go to Shape Format > Align and choose an alignment option such as Align Top or Distribute Horizontally.
4. Format the Section Zoom thumbnail appearance
   Right-click a Section Zoom thumbnail and select Format Zoom. The Format Zoom pane opens on the right. Under Zoom Options, you can adjust the border color, border weight, and transparency. To add a shadow or reflection, click the Effects icon (the pentagon) in the Format Zoom pane and expand Shadow or Reflection. To remove the border entirely, set Border to No Line.
5. Enable the Return to Zoom behavior
   Select a Section Zoom thumbnail. The Zoom tab appears on the ribbon. In the Zoom Options group, check the box labeled Return to Zoom. When this option is enabled, after the slideshow finishes playing the linked section, it automatically returns to the slide containing the Zoom thumbnail. Without this option, the slideshow continues with the next slide after the section ends.
6. Test the Section Zoom in Slide Show mode
   Press F5 to start the slideshow from the beginning. Navigate to the slide with the Section Zoom thumbnails. Click one thumbnail. The slideshow jumps to the first slide of that section and plays through the section. After the last slide of the section, the slideshow returns to the menu slide (if Return to Zoom was enabled). Press Escape to exit the slideshow at any time.

Common Mistakes and Limitations When Using Section Zoom

Section Zoom thumbnails are missing or show a blank image

This happens when the section contains only one slide and that slide has no content. Ensure each section has at least one slide with visible content such as text, images, or shapes. If the section has only a blank slide, PowerPoint cannot generate a meaningful thumbnail. Add a title or graphic to the first slide of each section.

Section Zoom does not jump to the correct slide

This occurs when slides are moved between sections after the Zoom thumbnail was created. Section Zoom remembers the section name, not the slide order. If you move a slide from one section to another, the Zoom thumbnail still points to the original section name. To fix this, delete the existing Section Zoom thumbnail and insert a new one from Insert > Zoom > Section Zoom.

Return to Zoom does not work after the section ends

This feature only works when the section contains multiple slides and the slideshow reaches the last slide of the section. If the section has only one slide, the slideshow does not recognize the end of the section and continues to the next slide. Add at least two slides to the section, or insert a blank slide at the end of the section to trigger the return.

Section Zoom thumbnails are not clickable during a slideshow

This happens when the thumbnail is placed behind another object such as a text box or shape. Right-click the thumbnail, select Bring to Front, and verify that no other object overlaps it. Also check that the thumbnail is not set to appear only after a click animation. Select the thumbnail, go to Animations, and ensure no animation is applied.
