How to Use Discord Watch Together Activity in Voice Channels

Discord Watch Together is a built-in activity that lets you and your friends stream YouTube videos in a voice channel without sharing your entire screen. Instead of using screen share, everyone in the channel sees the same video timeline and can control playback if you give them permission. This feature works directly inside Discord, so you do not need extra software or browser extensions. This article explains how to start a Watch Together session, manage controls, and avoid common issues.

What Is Discord Watch Together and What Do You Need

Discord Watch Together is an Activity that streams YouTube videos inside a voice channel. It is different from screen sharing because it shows only the video player, not your entire desktop or browser. The video plays in sync for all members in the voice channel. The host controls the video by default, but the host can give control to others.

Prerequisites

To use Watch Together, you need the following:

• A Discord server where you have the Start Activity permission. By default, server members can start activities.
• The server must have at least Server Boost level 1. Watch Together is not available on unboosted servers.
• You must be in a voice channel inside that server. Text channels or stage channels do not support Watch Together.
• A valid YouTube video URL. The feature does not support other streaming platforms like Vimeo or Twitch.

How Watch Together Works

When you start Watch Together, Discord opens a small YouTube player inside the voice channel interface. All members in the voice channel see the same video at the same time. The host can pause, skip, or change the video. If the host leaves the voice channel, the session ends for everyone. Up to 50 people can watch together in one session.

Steps to Start and Use Watch Together in a Voice Channel

Follow these steps to launch Watch Together and share a YouTube video with your server members.

1. Join a voice channel
   Open your Discord server and click any voice channel to join it. You must be inside the voice channel to start an activity.
2. Open the Activity Launcher
   At the bottom of the voice channel interface, locate the rocket icon labeled Activity Launcher. Click it to open the list of available activities.
3. Select Watch Together
   From the activity list, find and click Watch Together. The icon shows a TV screen with a play button. A new window opens requesting a YouTube link.
4. Paste a YouTube video URL
   Copy the URL of the YouTube video you want to watch. Paste it into the text box in the Watch Together window. Click the Play button. The video starts playing for everyone in the voice channel.
5. Control playback
   As the host, you can pause, resume, skip, or change the video. Click the gear icon in the player to adjust playback controls. You can allow other members to control the video by toggling Give Control to Everyone in the settings.
6. Add videos to the queue
   If you want to watch multiple videos, click the Add to Queue button below the player. Paste additional YouTube URLs. The queue plays videos in the order you add them.

Common Mistakes and Limitations When Using Watch Together

Watch Together Does Not Appear in the Activity List

If you do not see Watch Together in the Activity Launcher, your server likely does not have enough boosts. Watch Together requires at least Server Boost level 1. Go to Server Settings > Server Boost to check your current boost level. If the server is not boosted, you cannot use Watch Together. You can also check if the server owner has disabled the activity in Server Settings > Roles > Permissions by removing the Start Activity permission.

Video Does Not Play or Shows an Error

Watch Together only supports standard YouTube video URLs. It does not support YouTube Shorts, unlisted videos, age-restricted videos, or videos with copyright blocks. Make sure the URL starts with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=. If the video is private or deleted, paste a different URL.

Members Cannot See or Hear the Video

Each member must have the Discord desktop app or web browser open. The feature does not work on the Discord mobile app. Also, members must have the server and voice channel loaded. If a member is in the voice channel but cannot see the video, ask them to refresh Discord or rejoin the voice channel.

Session Ends When the Host Leaves

Only the host can run the Watch Together session. If the host leaves the voice channel or closes Discord, the session stops for everyone. To avoid this, transfer host control before leaving. Click the gear icon in the player, then select Transfer Host and choose a member. The new host must also be in the voice channel.
