Fix Discord Forum Channel Tags Not Appearing When Creating New Posts

When you open a Discord forum channel to create a new post, the tag selection area may be missing entirely. This prevents you from categorizing posts with the correct tags, which can disrupt organization and search within the forum. The problem usually occurs because tags are not enabled or configured correctly in the channel settings, or because the user lacks the required permissions. Why Forum Channel Tags Are Missing

Discord forum channels use tags to categorize posts. Tags are optional by default, and the channel owner or administrator must enable them. If no tags exist in the channel, the tag selection area will not appear when creating a new post. Additionally, even if tags are created, users must have the “Use Tags” permission to see them. The role assigned to the user may have this permission denied or not granted. Another cause is that the channel’s forum settings may have the “Require Tags” option turned off, which makes the tag field invisible. Understanding these settings is key to fixing the issue.

Steps to Restore Forum Channel Tags

Follow these steps in order. You need to have the “Manage Channels” permission on the server to modify forum settings. If you are not a server administrator, ask the server owner to perform these steps.

Step 1: Verify You Have the Correct Permissions

1. Open Server Settings
   Right-click the server name in the channel list and select Server Settings. Alternatively, click the server name at the top left and choose Server Settings from the dropdown menu.
2. Navigate to Roles
   In the left sidebar, click Roles. Find the role assigned to your user account.
3. Check Permissions
   Click the role name. Under the General Permissions section, ensure Manage Channels is enabled. If not, toggle it on. Scroll down to Text Channel Permissions and confirm Use Tags is enabled. Click Save Changes at the bottom.

Step 2: Create Tags in the Forum Channel

1. Open the Forum Channel Settings
   Right-click the forum channel name in the channel list and select Edit Channel.
2. Go to Forum Settings
   In the left sidebar, click Forum Settings. You will see a section labeled Post Tags.
3. Add Tags

4. Enable Require Tags

Step 3: Check Channel Permissions for Users

1. Open Channel Permissions
   While still in the Edit Channel window, click Permissions in the left sidebar.
2. Review Role Permissions
   Select the role that users have, such as @everyone. Scroll to the Text Channel Permissions section. Ensure Use Tags is set to the green checkmark (allowed). If it is set to the red X (denied), click the toggle to allow it. Click Save Changes.
3. Test the Forum
   Close the settings. Click the New Post button in the forum channel. The tag selection area should appear below the post title field. If it does not, refresh the Discord client by pressing Ctrl + R (Windows) or Cmd + R (Mac).

If Tags Still Do Not Appear

User Role Has Override That Denies Tags

A role higher in the hierarchy may have an explicit deny for “Use Tags.” Go to Server Settings > Roles and review each role that applies to the user. Look for the red X on “Use Tags” and change it to a green checkmark. Remember that the highest role in the role list takes priority if there is a conflict.

Tag Limit Reached

Discord allows a maximum of 20 tags per forum channel. If you have already created 20 tags, the tag selection field will still appear, but you cannot add more. If the field is missing despite having tags, delete one tag and recreate it. This refreshes the tag list.

Discord Client Cache Issue

Sometimes the Discord client caches old settings. Clear the cache by pressing Ctrl + Shift + I to open Developer Tools. Click the Network tab, check the Disable cache checkbox, and reload the page with Ctrl + R. Alternatively, restart Discord completely.
