How to Enable Discord Server Premium Features Selectively per Channel

Discord Server Boosts unlock premium features like higher audio quality, custom invite backgrounds, and more emoji slots for the entire server. However, you may want to enable some of these features only in specific channels rather than globally. For example, you might want 384 kbps audio only in your music voice channel or animated emoji only in a general chat channel. This article explains how to configure Discord’s permission system to apply premium features selectively per channel without affecting the rest of the server.

Understanding Discord Premium Features and Permission Inheritance

Discord Server Boosts apply perks to the entire server by default. These perks include increased upload limits, more emoji slots, custom invite splash, and higher audio bitrate (up to 384 kbps at Boost Tier 2). However, Discord’s permission system allows you to override these defaults at the channel level. The key is to understand that permissions are inherited from the server-wide @everyone role. If you leave a premium permission enabled for @everyone, it applies to all channels. To make it selective, you must first disable it globally and then enable it only in the channels where you want it active.

Which Premium Features Can Be Controlled Per Channel?

Not all premium features are channel-specific. The following premium features can be controlled per channel using permissions:

• Use External Emoji: Allows members to use emoji from other servers. You can enable this in a specific channel.
• Use External Stickers: Same as above for stickers.
• Priority Speaker: Lets members push their voice to the front in voice channels. Can be enabled per voice channel.

Steps to Enable Premium Features Selectively Per Channel

Follow these steps to disable premium features server-wide and then enable them only in the channels you choose.

Step 1: Disable the Premium Permission for @everyone

1. Open Server Settings
   Click your server name in the top-left corner of Discord, then select Server Settings from the dropdown menu.
2. Go to Roles
   In the left sidebar, click Roles. This shows all roles in your server.
3. Select the @everyone role
   Click on the @everyone role. This is the default role that applies to all members.
4. Find the premium permission
   Scroll down to the General Permissions section. Locate the permission you want to restrict, for example Use External Emoji.
5. Set the permission to OFF
   Click the toggle next to that permission to set it to the X (disabled) position. This removes the permission for all channels by default.

   Right-click the voice channel where you want higher audio bitrate or Priority Speaker. Select Edit Channel.
2. Set audio bitrate
   In the Overview tab, find Bitrate. Drag the slider to a higher value, up to 384 kbps if your server is Boost Tier 2 or higher. This setting applies only to this voice channel.
3. Enable Priority Speaker
   Go to Permissions for this voice channel. Add a role override and enable Priority Speaker. Members with that role will automatically have their voice prioritized in this channel.
4. Enable 1080p video
   In the same permissions list, find Video Quality. Set it to enabled for the role. This allows members to stream at 1080p resolution in this voice channel only.

Common Mistakes and Limitations

Permission Override Not Applied Because of Role Order

If you enabled the permission for a role but members still cannot use the feature, check the role hierarchy. Discord applies the highest role in the server settings hierarchy. Ensure the role you granted the permission to is higher than any other role that denies it. You can reorder roles in Server Settings > Roles by dragging them.

Premium Feature Still Works Everywhere

If you forgot to disable the permission globally in Step 1, the feature remains enabled for all channels. Go back to the @everyone role and verify the permission is set to the X (disabled) position. Then check the channel override is set to the green checkmark.

Some Premium Features Cannot Be Controlled Per Channel

Features like custom invite splash, animated server icon, and server banner are server-wide only. You cannot enable them in individual channels. Similarly, the 50 MB upload limit at Boost Tier 1 applies to all channels and cannot be restricted per channel via permissions.

Members with Administrator Permission Ignore Overrides

If a member has the Administrator permission, they bypass all channel-specific permission overrides. To enforce selective premium features, ensure that role does not have Administrator, or create a separate role for those members.
